CPM Leader AV Jayan Announces Party Exit Over Harassment Claims
CPM leader and former district president of Karshaka Sangham A V Jayan has declared his decision to dissociate from the party. He alleges that a section of the district leadership has been personally hounding him for the past one and a half years.
Neglect and Organizational Difficulties Cited
Jayan, who was recently elected as a member of the Poothadi grama panchayat, expressed frustration with the party's neglect. He stated that in a situation where he feels ignored and undervalued, stepping aside becomes the most appropriate action.
"It has become difficult to associate with the party organizationally," Jayan said. "I have decided to stay away from the party's organizational system."
Despite this move, Jayan clarified that he will continue to fulfill his responsibilities as an elected representative for the next five years.
Election Controversy and Sidelining
The CPM contested the election in Poothadi panchayat under Jayan's leadership. However, the party did not consider him for the position of panchayat president.
In Poothadi, the UDF and LDF each have ten members, while the BJP holds three seats. CPM's E K Balakrishnan secured the president's post after a vote from a Congress member was declared invalid.
Jayan and another LDF member boycotted the standing committee elections held on January 7. Jayan revealed that he initially expressed disinterest in contesting the local body elections but was compelled to do so after party insistence.
After winning from his ward, Jayan was allegedly sidelined by not being given the president post.
Past Disciplinary Actions and Factionalism
Last year, Jayan faced demotion from the area committee to the local committee. This action followed allegations of diverting relief funds in 2019 for constructing a party office.
Jayan claimed the disciplinary measure was politically motivated and stemmed from internal factionalism. He is not aligned with the dominant faction in the district, led by CPM district secretary K Rafeeq and former MLA C K Saseendran.
He alleged that a group within the party has been attempting to sideline him systematically.
Appeal and Revocation of Action
Jayan appealed against the disciplinary action to the state committee. Subsequently, the action related to the fund diversion allegations was revoked.
However, action was taken against him for publicly speaking to the media. This incident further strained his relationship with the party leadership.
Jayan's decision highlights ongoing internal conflicts within the CPM's Kozhikode district unit. His exit marks a significant development in local politics, reflecting deeper issues of factionalism and leadership disputes.
