Cross-voting in Karnataka deepens NDA rift, casts shadow on alliance future
Cross-voting deepens NDA rift in Karnataka alliance

Cross-voting exposes cracks in Karnataka NDA

Cross-voting by legislators from the BJP and its ally Janata Dal (Secular) in the recent Karnataka Legislative Council elections has deepened the rift within the National Democratic Alliance (NDA), casting a shadow over the future of the coalition. The infighting, which played out in the biennial elections to 11 MLC seats from the local authorities constituency on June 22, 2026, has left both parties scrambling to manage internal dissent.

The BJP-JD(S) alliance, formed ahead of the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, has been marked by friction at the grassroots level, where the two parties are direct rivals in several constituencies. The cross-voting incident is the most visible sign yet that the pact is a hurdle for leaders who face each other in local battles.

How cross-voting unfolded

According to party sources, at least three JD(S) MLCs voted for Congress candidates instead of the BJP-JD(S) joint candidate. On the BJP side, two legislators allegedly cross-voted, supporting the JD(S) candidate over the alliance nominee. The votes were crucial: the NDA needed 31 votes to win one of the 11 seats, but fell short by four votes due to the cross-voting.

“This is a serious breach of party discipline. We will take action against those who defied the whip,” said a senior BJP functionary, speaking on condition of anonymity. The JD(S) leadership also expressed displeasure, with a party spokesperson stating, “We are investigating the matter. Internal dissent will not be tolerated.”

Alliance under strain

The cross-voting comes amid growing unease within the NDA. The BJP and JD(S) have historically been rivals in Karnataka, and the alliance has struggled to reconcile their conflicting interests. The JD(S) has accused the BJP of not honoring power-sharing agreements, while the BJP believes the JD(S) is not fully committed to the coalition.

Political analyst Dr. A. Veerappa Gowda said, “The alliance is a marriage of convenience. At the local level, party workers and leaders are still fighting each other. Cross-voting is a symptom of this deep-seated rivalry.”

Impact on 2028 elections

The incident has raised questions about the NDA’s prospects in the 2028 Karnataka assembly elections. Both parties need each other to counter the Congress, but internal bickering could erode voter confidence. A JD(S) leader, requesting anonymity, admitted, “If we cannot even ensure discipline among our own legislators, how can we convince voters we are a stable alternative?”

The BJP high command is likely to intervene to salvage the alliance. However, with the JD(S) demanding more seats and the BJP reluctant to cede ground, the path ahead is uncertain.
