DMK's Coalition Partners Applaud Tamil Nadu's ₹5,000 KMUT Scheme Disbursement
In a significant development from Chennai, political allies of the ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) have collectively welcomed the state government's decision to credit ₹5,000 into the bank accounts of beneficiaries under the Kalaignar Mahalir Urimai Thittam (KMUT) scheme. The disbursal, which occurred on Friday, has been hailed as a timely measure to provide economic relief to households grappling with rising inflation.
Congress Leadership Highlights Cumulative Financial Support
Tamil Nadu Congress Committee (TNCC) president K Selvaperunthagai emphasized that over the last two months, each beneficiary has received a total of ₹8,000. This includes ₹3,000 distributed as a Pongal gift, followed by the recent ₹5,000 under the KMUT initiative. "This financial assistance will offer substantial relief to poor and middle-class families who are struggling with the ongoing inflationary pressures," Selvaperunthagai stated. He further alleged that the Union government has been attempting to obstruct the implementation of this welfare scheme, though specific details of these attempts were not elaborated upon.
Broad Support from Congress MPs and Other Allies
The announcement has garnered support from several Congress Members of Parliament, including Manickam Tagore, Jothimani, and Karti Chidambaram, who all expressed their approval of the state government's move. Meanwhile, Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK) leader Thol Thirumavalavan described the disbursal as a "pleasant surprise" and commended Chief Minister M K Stalin for proceeding with the payments despite facing criticism. Thirumavalavan noted that this decision effectively counters alleged efforts to delay the disbursements by citing the upcoming election period.
CPM and Other DMK-Led Front Leaders Echo Approval
Communist Party of India (Marxist) state secretary P Shanmugam reported that families of the 1.31 crore beneficiaries are "expressing happiness" following the crediting of ₹5,000 to their accounts. In a social media post, Shanmugam affirmed, "We welcome this announcement on behalf of our party." Additional endorsements came from Manithaneya Makkal Katchi (MMK) leader Prof M H Jawahirullah, Muslim Jamaat-e-Khilafat (MJK) leader Thamimun Ansari, and various other leaders within the DMK-led front, all of whom praised the initiative as a positive step toward supporting vulnerable populations.
The widespread political backing underscores the scheme's perceived importance in addressing economic hardships, with allies highlighting its role in mitigating inflation impacts and reinforcing the state government's commitment to social welfare amidst broader political challenges.
