A planned educational excursion for a group of elderly residents from a Kerala care home turned into a distressing experience, leading them to abandon their visit to a prominent museum. The incident, which occurred at the Hill Palace Museum in Tripunithura, Kochi, has sparked a complaint to the highest levels of the state government.

Excursion Turns Sour at Museum Gates

The unfortunate event took place on Wednesday. The group hailed from Snehakoodu, a care home based in Kottayam. Organised as a part of their recreational activities, the trip was intended to be a joyful day out at the historical Hill Palace Museum. Nisha, who runs the facility, was leading the team. Understanding the mobility challenges some members faced, only those who were able to walk decided to enter the museum premises, while others who used wheelchairs opted to remain on their bus.

Alleged Insistence and Abuse by Police Personnel

The situation escalated when a policeman deployed at the museum insisted that every member of the group, including those who planned to stay on the bus, must purchase an entry ticket. Nisha stated that the group tried to reason with the official, explaining the circumstances, but he remained unmoved. The interaction reportedly grew more hostile. The official is alleged to have used abusive language, showing disrespect towards the elderly group. Feeling humiliated and upset by this treatment, the group made the collective decision to leave the venue without visiting the museum at all.

Complaint Filed, CM's Office Responds

Following the incident, the group did not let the matter rest. They formally filed a complaint regarding the incident, addressing it directly to the Chief Minister's office. This action underscores the seriousness with which they viewed the alleged misconduct. Nisha confirmed that they have since received a reply from the CM's office, which has promised a detailed inquiry into the matter. The response from the authorities indicates that the complaint is being taken seriously and may lead to an investigation into the conduct of the police personnel on duty that day.

The episode raises significant questions about sensitivity and protocol when dealing with senior citizens and differently-abled visitors at public tourist spots. It highlights the need for clear guidelines and training for staff, including security personnel, to ensure that heritage sites remain accessible and welcoming for all sections of society.
