Ex-Kochi Mayor Warns UDF on Brahmapuram Spending

Former Kochi Mayor Issues Strong Warning to UDF-Led Council

Former mayor and CPM state committee member M Anilkumar delivered a sharp warning to the United Democratic Front (UDF)-led governing committee of Kochi corporation. He cautioned them against overspending at Brahmapuram and overestimating the waste to be treated there. Anilkumar stated this could pave the way for corruption.

Countering Mayor's Criticisms

Anilkumar addressed a news conference in Kochi on Friday. He aimed to counter criticisms directed at the previous Left Democratic Front (LDF)-led council by mayor V K Minimol. The mayor made these remarks following her visit to Brahmapuram earlier this week.

"People are aware of the transformation at Brahmapuram," Anilkumar said. He noted the site was marked by waste mountains when he assumed charge as mayor in 2020. "Whatever more needs to be done should be done, but taxpayers' money should not be wasted needlessly," he emphasized. This statement referred to the mayor's claim that Brahmapuram requires new projects to improve its condition.

Challenging Waste Treatment Claims

Anilkumar also contested the mayor's remarks questioning the efficiency of black soldier fly (BSF)-based plants at Brahmapuram. He challenged the rates charged for waste treatment. He pointed out that only one of the two plants requires fine-tuning. Each plant has a capacity of 50 tonnes.

"Disrupting the existing functional system at Brahmapuram by overestimating the waste generated within corporation limits will only lead to widespread corruption," Anilkumar warned. He explained this could happen through inflated investments in treatment facilities and unnecessary hiring of trucks for waste transportation.

Analyzing Waste Capacity

Anilkumar provided a detailed analysis of waste treatment capacity. The combined capacity of 150 tonnes includes the upcoming compressed biogas plant along with the two BSF plants. This would at best leave out about 30-50 tonnes. Considering that 180-200 tonnes are generated daily in the city, a windrow plant would be sufficient to handle the remainder.

Comment on Indira Canteen Initiative

Anilkumar added a comment about the UDF's announcement of Indira Canteen to provide budget meals. He stated there is nothing wrong with this initiative. However, he emphasized it should not come at the expense of Samridhi@Kochi outlets.
