Controversial Figure Secures Victory in Jalna Municipal Corporation Elections
Shrikant Pangarkar, a name linked to two high-profile criminal cases, achieved a surprising political victory on Friday. He won as an Independent candidate in the Jalna Municipal Corporation polls. Pangarkar defeated candidates from established parties, including the Bharatiya Janata Party, to secure the councillor position from Ward 13.
A Political Journey Marked by Controversy
Pangarkar's political career began with the undivided Shiv Sena. He served as a municipal councillor in Jalna from 2001 to 2006. The party denied him a ticket for the 2011 civic elections. This rejection prompted his move to the Hindu Janjagruti Samiti.
His political path took a dramatic turn in 2018. Authorities arrested him in connection with two separate investigations.
Legal Troubles and Bail Status
The Karnataka Police's Special Investigation Team detained Pangarkar for his alleged involvement in the Gauri Lankesh murder case. Journalist Gauri Lankesh was shot dead outside her Bengaluru residence on September 5, 2017. Investigators claim Pangarkar advised co-accused individuals on precautions during the conspiracy.
Simultaneously, the Maharashtra Anti-Terrorism Squad arrested him in the Nallasopara arms haul case. This case originated from a 2018 probe following the seizure of weapons and ammunition. The ATS alleged the accused planned to disrupt the Sunburn music festival in Pune in December 2017. They intended to throw petrol bombs and stones, claiming the event opposed Hindu culture. The plan was reportedly abandoned after one accused realized CCTV footage captured him.
Pangarkar spent time in Mumbai's Arthur Road Jail. However, the Karnataka High Court granted him bail in the Lankesh case in 2024. He also received bail in the Nallasopara case. Both trials are currently ongoing, with all accused out on bail.
Brief Shiv Sena Return and Public Outrage
Ahead of the 2024 Maharashtra Assembly elections, Pangarkar briefly rejoined the Shiv Sena. The party was then led by Chief Minister Eknath Shinde. Public outrage erupted immediately following his induction. The serious criminal allegations against him sparked widespread criticism. The Shiv Sena dropped him from the party within a single day.
Pangarkar comes from a political family. His father also served as a municipal corporator in the past.
This electoral victory in Jalna marks a significant development. It highlights how candidates with serious legal charges can still secure public office in India's political landscape. The win raises questions about voter priorities and the intersection of crime and politics.
