Governor Gehlot Calls for Responsible Voting, Emphasizes Constitutional Spirit on Republic Day

In a significant address during Bengaluru's 77th Republic Day celebrations, Karnataka Governor Thaawar Chand Gehlot made a compelling appeal to citizens to exercise their voting rights with utmost responsibility. Speaking at the Manekshaw Parade Ground on Monday, Governor Gehlot stressed the critical importance of electing representatives who genuinely understand and uphold the core spirit of India's Constitution.

Democracy Thrives Through Questioning and Dialogue

Governor Gehlot articulated that the preservation of democracy requires continuous questioning, constructive dialogue, and active participation from all citizens. He reminded the audience that the ultimate responsibility for safeguarding India's democratic framework rests with the people themselves, echoing Mahatma Gandhi's profound emphasis on informed and engaged citizenship.

"Democracy is not a spectator sport," Governor Gehlot remarked, "it demands our constant vigilance, our voices, and our votes to ensure it remains vibrant and true to its founding principles."

Constitutional Values as India's Bedrock of Peace

Reflecting on the enduring relevance of the Constitution in contemporary times, Governor Gehlot noted that India continues to live in peace and harmony precisely because of its strong constitutional values. He observed that the belief "the Constitution protects those who protect it" has only grown stronger over the decades, serving as a guiding light for the nation's progress.

The governor highlighted how these constitutional principles form the foundation upon which India's diverse society builds unity and collective purpose.

Karnataka's Governance Focus: Social Justice and Economic Empowerment

Turning to state-specific priorities, Governor Gehlot outlined Karnataka's governance approach centered on three key pillars:

  • Social Justice through equitable policies and opportunities
  • Economic Empowerment of all communities
  • Inclusive Development that leaves no citizen behind

He emphasized that the state treats liberty, equality, and fraternity not just as constitutional concepts but as practical guiding principles for all governance initiatives.

Welfare Schemes Transforming Lives Through Direct Benefit Transfer

Governor Gehlot pointed to Karnataka's major welfare initiatives as evidence of this commitment to inclusive governance. He specifically highlighted the government's guarantee schemes, which involve substantial public spending designed to:

  1. Improve purchasing power among vulnerable populations
  2. Empower women through financial independence
  3. Strengthen last-mile delivery of benefits

The direct transfer of benefits to beneficiaries' bank accounts has emerged as a particularly effective mechanism, ensuring that support reaches intended recipients without intermediaries or delays.

Cultural Celebrations Showcase Bengaluru's Youth Talent

The Republic Day parade featured vibrant cultural performances by approximately 2,800 students from various Bengaluru educational institutions:

  • Around 1,400 children from two BBMP schools presented two dance performances
  • 650 students from BCCW Composite College in Herohalli participated enthusiastically
  • Another group of 750 children from Government High School in Bagalagunte showcased their talents

These performances added color and energy to the celebrations, demonstrating the city's rich cultural diversity and the talent of its younger generation.

Governor Gehlot's address served as both a reminder of democratic responsibilities and a showcase of Karnataka's developmental achievements, framing Republic Day as both a celebration of constitutional values and an opportunity to recommit to their practical implementation in governance and civic life.
