Opposition leader Yuri Alemao demanded a firm commitment from Chief Minister Pramod Sawant on Friday. He wants the government to protect Goa's unique identity by taking concrete steps. Alemao specifically called for stopping land sales, preventing illegal hill cutting, and finalizing the state's carrying capacity.
Private Member's Resolution on Opinion Poll Day
Yuri Alemao moved a private member's resolution in the assembly. This happened on Opinion Poll Day, which marked the last day of the winter session in Porvorim. He stressed the urgency of defining Goa's carrying capacity to manage development sustainably.
Environmental Concerns Raised
"When will Goa's carrying capacity be defined?" Alemao asked during the session. He pointed out several pressing issues. Rivers are facing pollution, land conversions occur frequently, and hills are being destroyed. Alemao insisted these activities must cease immediately to safeguard the state's environment.
The opposition leader also highlighted the threat of private policing. He warned that if non-state actors start enforcing laws, it could erode Goa's identity. Alemao emphasized that the environment forms the core of what makes Goa special.
"Hills, coastline, and rivers are not just resources," he stated. "They are integral to our culture and civilization. Damaging them leads to more than ecological loss; it means losing our heritage."Support from Other MLAs
Other Congress members echoed Alemao's concerns. Quepem MLA Altone D'Costa told the Chief Minister that people trying to divide Goa need to be controlled. Aldona MLA Carlos Ferreira added that the state's unique identity is under threat and must be defended.
Chief Minister's Response
Chief Minister Pramod Sawant responded to the demands. He clarified that the government is not involved in selling land. Despite his repeated appeals, Yuri Alemao refused to withdraw the resolution. The opposition stood firm on seeking assurances for Goa's preservation.
The assembly session concluded with ongoing debates about how to balance development with environmental protection. Stakeholders continue to discuss ways to maintain Goa's distinct character amid growing pressures.
