Haryana Congress MLA Condemns Lathicharge on Water Protesters

Congress MLA Naresh Selwal from the Uklana Assembly constituency has strongly condemned the police lathicharge and use of tear gas shells on villagers in Chanot village, Hansi district, during a protest demanding drinking water supply on Monday night.

MLA Denounces Police Action as Dictatorial

Selwal stated that the use of force against the protesters exposed the dictatorial attitude of authorities, who aim to silence any voice raising demands for basic necessities like drinking water. He said the villagers had been protesting for nearly 40 days seeking a solution to the drinking water crisis.

“Instead of addressing their concerns, the government attempted to suppress their voice through police action, which is unfortunate and condemnable,” Selwal said.

Allegations Against BJP Government

The Congress MLA alleged that the incident reveals the insensitive attitude of the BJP government and its representatives toward public concerns. He demanded a permanent solution to the drinking water problem in Chanot village and an adequate water supply at the earliest.

Selwal’s remarks come amid heightened tensions in the region, where residents have been struggling with water scarcity for weeks. The protest had been peaceful until the police intervention, which included lathicharge and tear gas to disperse the crowd.

Background of the Protest

Chanot village in Hansi district has faced chronic water shortages, leading residents to stage a prolonged protest. The demonstration had been ongoing for over a month, with villagers demanding immediate action from the state government. The police action on Monday night escalated the situation, drawing criticism from opposition leaders.

Selwal’s condemnation adds to the political outcry against the state administration, with the Congress party accusing the ruling BJP of neglecting rural needs. The MLA has called for an inquiry into the police conduct and urged the government to prioritize water supply in the area.
