The panchayat's political equation is finely balanced. The ruling Left Democratic Front (LDF), led by the CPM, currently has 8 members. The opposition United Democratic Front (UDF) also has 8 members. This makes Sreeja, the lone independent member, the kingmaker whose allegiance determines which coalition holds power. It is this pivotal position that, she claims, made her a target for horse-trading.
