Opposition to Kambala Inclusion in Dasara
Mysuru-Kodagu MP Yaduveer Wadiyar and Karnataka BJP president B Y Vijayendra have voiced strong opposition to the state government's proposal to include Kambala, the traditional buffalo race, in the Mysuru Dasara celebrations. The leaders argue that the move disregards the cultural sentiments of the people of Mysuru and could dilute the traditional character of the festival.
Vijayendra's Appeal to Government
State BJP president B Y Vijayendra urged the government to respect the sentiments of the people of Mysuru and refrain from what he termed as 'stubborn behaviour'. He emphasized that Dasara is a centuries-old festival deeply rooted in the region's heritage and that introducing Kambala, which is primarily associated with the coastal districts of Dakshina Kannada and Udupi, would be inappropriate.
Wadiyar's Stand on Cultural Integrity
MP Yaduveer Wadiyar, a scion of the erstwhile Mysuru royal family, echoed similar concerns. He stated that Dasara has its own unique traditions and rituals that should be preserved. Including Kambala, he argued, could undermine the festival's identity and lead to unnecessary controversy.
Background of the Proposal
The government's plan to incorporate Kambala into Dasara was reportedly aimed at promoting the sport and showcasing Karnataka's diverse cultural practices. However, the move has sparked a political row, with opposition leaders accusing the government of trying to impose coastal traditions on the Mysuru region.
Political Reactions and Implications
The issue has also drawn reactions from other political quarters. Some Congress leaders have supported the inclusion, citing the need to celebrate Karnataka's unity in diversity. Meanwhile, local cultural organizations in Mysuru have expressed solidarity with Wadiyar and Vijayendra, urging the government to reconsider its decision.
As the debate continues, the government has not yet issued an official response to the opposition. The final decision on the Dasara schedule is expected in the coming weeks.
