Karnataka Power Struggle Intensifies as Anjaneya Backs Jarkiholi for Chief Ministerial Role
In a significant development within the Karnataka Congress, former minister H Anjaneya has publicly urged Chief Minister Siddaramaiah to project Public Works Department Minister Satish Jarkiholi as the next chief ministerial face. This statement, made during an event in Chitradurga on Tuesday, adds a new dimension to the ongoing power tussle in the state, which has been rife with speculation over a potential change of guard.
Anjaneya's Call for Leadership Transition
Anjaneya, a known loyalist of Siddaramaiah, emphasized that wherever Satish Jarkiholi goes, people raise slogans proclaiming him as the future chief minister. He highlighted Jarkiholi's past efforts in rallying support behind Siddaramaiah and expressed a heartfelt wish for Jarkiholi to have the opportunity to rule the state. "Siddaramaiah, after completing his term, should project Satish Jarkiholi as the next CM face," Anjaneya stated, expressing confidence that Siddaramaiah would facilitate this transition.
Background of Leadership Speculation
The remarks come amid persistent rumors about leadership changes in Karnataka, often triggered by visits of top leaders to Delhi. Recently, Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar's trip to the capital fueled speculation, with his loyalists, including Congress MLA Iqbal Hussain, claiming that 80-90 MLAs have petitioned the Congress high command to appoint Shivakumar as chief minister during the current term. Hussain countered assertions by MLC Yathindra Siddaramaiah that his father would serve a full term.
Shivakumar, however, downplayed the confusion, referring to a meeting where a power-sharing agreement was discussed. "It will not benefit anyone if others issue statements about the power tussle. Issuing statements in my favour or against me damages the party," he said, urging adherence to AICC president Mallikarjun Kharge's advice to avoid public comments on the matter.
Jarkiholi's Response to the Power Tussle
A day before Anjaneya's pitch, Satish Jarkiholi acknowledged the ongoing battle within the party. "There is a battle going on. Let's see what happens. We are awaiting a decision," he said, noting that clarity from the high command is sought by everyone. When asked about claims that Shivakumar commands more MLA support than Siddaramaiah, Jarkiholi dismissed the notion, stating, "Whoever is efficient will be selected. The situation has not arisen." On his own aspirations, he remained non-committal, saying, "Let's see when the time comes."
Implications for Karnataka Congress
This public endorsement by Anjaneya adds to the complex dynamics within the Karnataka Congress, where multiple factions are vying for influence. The power struggle between Siddaramaiah and Shivakumar has been a recurring theme, with Jarkiholi emerging as a potential third contender. As the party grapples with internal dissent, the high command's decision will be crucial in determining the state's political future.
The situation underscores the challenges of coalition politics and leadership management in Karnataka, with stakeholders eagerly awaiting resolution to ensure stability and unity within the Congress ranks.
