Khanna Implements 12-Hour Heavy Vehicle Ban to Combat Traffic Congestion

In a decisive move to address escalating traffic issues, District Magistrate Himanshu Jain has announced a comprehensive 12-hour daily ban on heavy vehicles within the Municipal Council limits of Khanna. This significant measure, effective immediately, prohibits trucks, trailers, and tippers from entering the town between 8 am and 8 pm each day.

Duration and Exemptions for Essential Services

The restriction is formally scheduled to remain in force from February 10, 2026, until April 9, 2026. Recognizing the need to maintain daily life, the administration has granted specific exemptions to ensure uninterrupted supply chains. Vehicles transporting essential commodities, including milk and LPG cylinders, are permitted during the ban hours. Additionally, vehicles with prior authorization from the District Magistrate's office will be allowed entry, safeguarding critical operations.

Strict Enforcement and Penalties for Violators

Local authorities have issued stern warnings regarding compliance with the new regulations. Drivers found violating the ban face severe consequences, including a hefty fine of Rs 20,000. Moreover, authorities reserve the right to impound vehicles that disregard the restrictions. To enforce this effectively, special checkpoints and dedicated traffic police teams are being deployed across Khanna to monitor major entry points and ensure adherence.

Official Statements and Public Awareness Efforts

Khanna police officials, led by SP Harpinder Kaur Gill and DSP Karamveer Toor, have confirmed that signboards are being installed at strategic locations to alert out-of-town drivers about the ban. They emphasized that the orders are being implemented "in letter and spirit" to provide much-needed relief to daily commuters and local residents. This proactive approach aims to reduce congestion, improve road safety, and enhance the overall quality of life in the area during the specified period.
