Kolkata police have arrested several Trinamool Congress functionaries in the past 24 hours on charges ranging from extortion and post-poll violence to running illicit rackets. The arrests have triggered tensions in various parts of the state.
Canning Tensions Flare After TMC Youth Leader Arrest
Tension flared in Canning after Trinamool Congress youth president Aritra Bose was arrested for allegedly shooting a Bharatiya Janata Party worker on counting day. Angry women, armed with brooms and shoes, surrounded the police station and attacked the prison van carrying Bose to Alipore court. The situation forced the deployment of central forces to maintain order.
Other Notable Arrests
Among those arrested were Bidhannagar Ward 26 councillor Sushovan Mondal and Abhijit Polley, alias Chottu, in an extortion case. Labour union functionary Tarak De, considered close to former minister Jyotipriya Mallick, was arrested in Habra for allegedly extorting auto drivers.
In separate cases, police arrested Sandeshkhali vice-president Sridam Hawli for land grabbing and attempted murder. Additionally, Ashoknagar netas Moni Gazi and Sheikh Injamul were arrested for attacking police personnel. Four other arrests were made in Hooghly and Swarupnagar connected to unresolved 2021 post-poll violence cases.
