Villagers Storm Maize Processing Plant in Kondagaon Over Pollution Allegations
Tension escalated in Kondagaon district of Chhattisgarh's Bastar division after hundreds of local residents allegedly vandalized a maize processing facility at Kokodi village. The violent protest erupted over accusations that the plant was releasing liquid waste into adjacent farmlands, causing significant crop damage and financial losses to farmers.
Violent Outburst Following Unaddressed Complaints
According to villagers, they had repeatedly submitted complaints to authorities about the plant's waste management practices but saw no concrete action taken. This perceived administrative inaction fueled mounting frustration that ultimately exploded into violence on Thursday night.
Officials reported that between 700 and 800 people gathered at the plant premises armed with sticks and stones. The protesters stormed the facility, ransacking offices and damaging multiple vehicles including cars, tractors, industrial machinery, and even a police van that was present at the scene.
Substantial Damage and Security Response
Initial assessments indicate the vandalism caused property damage estimated between Rs 10 lakh and Rs 20 lakh. Police and administrative officials rushed to the site upon receiving information about the incident, with additional forces called in from neighboring Kanker district to control the volatile situation.
Heavy police deployment remained in place outside the plant throughout Friday as villagers reportedly attempted to enter the premises again in the morning. Security personnel successfully pushed back these attempts, though the atmosphere remained highly charged.
Ongoing Tensions and Investigation
The situation in Kokodi village remained tense with police maintaining close surveillance. Some villagers were reported to be targeting security personnel from a distance using slingshots, adding to the volatility of the standoff.
A driver from Maharashtra who had come to the plant described hiding in a nearby forest to protect himself during the attack. The plant management had not issued any official statement at the time of reporting.
Police confirmed they have initiated a comprehensive inquiry into the incident. This investigation includes both assessment of material losses and verification of pollution and waste-disposal allegations leveled against the plant by local residents.
Plant Operations Halted Pending Resolution
The management of the maize processing plant has ordered a complete halt to all operations until further notice. Deputy Collector of Kondagaon Charlie Thakur stated that both administration and police are investigating the matter from all angles.
"As of now the plant has been closed," Thakur confirmed. "Based on further investigation reports, appropriate action will be taken."
Officials have appealed to residents to maintain peace as the administration works to restore normalcy in the area. The incident highlights growing tensions between industrial operations and agricultural communities in the region, particularly regarding environmental concerns and waste management practices.
