Magadh Region Faces Ministerial Drought in New Bihar Government
The formation of Nitish Kumar's new government has brought disappointment mixed with cautious optimism for the 20 NDA MLAs from Magadh division, as the region secured only one ministerial position—and that too held by an MLC. This limited representation has left many local legislators outside the coveted ministerial club, creating political unease in a significant part of Bihar.
Prem Kumar Emerges as Frontrunner for Speaker Position
All political eyes are now fixed on Prem Kumar, the state's senior most MLA whose chances of elevation to the Speaker's post have significantly brightened. The ninth-time winner from Gaya Town constituency represents a crucial combination of regional and social balance that the government appears to need. As the EBC face of the Hindutva party in Bihar, Prem Kumar's humble origins and impressive electoral record constitute his unique selling proposition in state politics.
Meanwhile, Santosh Suman's inclusion in the new cabinet was widely expected given his dual role as president of HAM(S) and political heir to former Chief Minister Jitan Ram Manjhi. Political analysts observe that like several other political heirs in Bihar's turbulent political landscape, Suman requires substantial support to navigate the complex cross-currents of state politics.
Political Dynamics and Regional Balance in Play
The situation reflects a broader pattern in Bihar politics where senior leaders like HAM(S) patron Jitan Ram Manjhi are actively working to ensure their sons gain political traction and accessibility. This dynastic dimension adds another layer to the complex calculations behind ministerial appointments and political positions.
However, uncertainty persists regarding Prem Kumar's potential appointment as Speaker. Akhauri Niranjan, a senior BJP leader and former 'patron'-turned-rival of Prem Kumar within the party in Gaya district, commented that the party leadership hasn't finalized its decision. "Prem is not indispensable for the party and he has already got much more than what he deserved," stated Niranjan, who once served as the face of the JP movement in the region.
Another significant appointment saw Sunil Kumar taking oath as minister on Thursday. Though not originally from Gaya, he maintains strong connections with the district having served both as Gaya SP and Magadh Range DIG. Local residents gratefully remember him for eliminating the terror unleashed by the notorious Bachchu-Bindi gang during the 1990s.
With several vacancies still existing and scope for nine additional ministers, NDA MLAs—particularly women legislators from JD(U)—haven't completely lost hope. Insiders indicate that hopefuls include Manorma Devi and Vibha Devi of JD(U), along with Binita Mehta of LJP(RV), whose husband serves as the BJP's Nawada district chief.
The list of potential ministers also includes Trivikram Singh, the first-time MLA from Aurangabad who secured victory despite formidable opposition and internal bickering, and Chetan Anand from Nabinagar, who benefits from having heavyweight parents—both Anand Mohan and Lovely Anand have served as MPs and maintain support across different political parties.
