Mahayuti Leads in Vasai Virar, BMC Polls Counting On

Mahayuti Alliance Gains Early Edge in Vasai Virar Civic Polls

Early counting trends are showing a promising start for the Bharatiya Janata Party-led Mahayuti alliance in the Vasai Virar municipal elections. These elections are drawing significant attention as voters decide who will manage the city's infrastructure and urban planning through the Vasai Virar Municipal Corporation.

Vote Counting Underway with Tight Security

Officials have confirmed that vote counting is currently in progress at designated centres across the region. Security measures are strict to ensure a smooth process. However, officials are cautioning everyone that these early trends could shift as more rounds of counting unfold. Several wards are witnessing tight contests, while a few have already recorded clear leads.

Key Details of the Vasai Virar Elections

A total of 1,234,690 voters are participating in this democratic exercise. They are electing representatives from 29 wards, with one councillor chosen from each ward. This election marks a crucial moment, especially considering the 2015 results. In that election, the Bahujan Vikas Aghadi achieved a decisive victory, securing 106 seats and gaining full control of the municipal body.

Parallel BMC Elections After Four-Year Delay

Meanwhile, vote counting is also underway for the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation elections. These elections are happening after a delay of four years. The BMC, with its massive annual budget exceeding Rs 74,400 crore, is a key administrative body. Around 1,700 candidates are contesting for 227 seats in this high-stakes poll.

It is important to note that unlike Mumbai, other urban local bodies in Maharashtra feature multi-member wards. This structural difference adds another layer to the electoral dynamics across the state.

Historic Context and Political Shifts

These BMC elections are the first since the significant split in the Shiv Sena in 2022. At that time, Eknath Shinde, who is now the Deputy Chief Minister, broke away with a majority of the party's MLAs. He then allied with the BJP to form the state government. This political realignment has reshaped the landscape.

For 25 years, from 1997 to 2022, the undivided Shiv Sena controlled the BMC, which is often called India's richest civic body. Now, the BJP-led Mahayuti alliance, which includes the Shiv Sena faction, is actively seeking a clear majority to govern this crucial corporation. The outcome will determine the future administration of Mumbai's civic affairs.

As counting continues, all eyes remain on both the Vasai Virar and BMC results. These elections are pivotal for urban governance in Maharashtra, reflecting broader political trends and voter sentiments in the region.
