Malankara Church Metropolitans Hopes for New Kerala Govt

The newly sworn-in state government in Kerala faces high expectations from the public, according to Yuhanon Mar Diascoros, metropolitan and head of the media department of the Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church. Speaking from Kottayam, he emphasized that the government must uphold justice and truth in alignment with the people's wishes.

Church Representation in Cabinet

Diascoros dismissed any concerns about the absence of Malankara Church members in the cabinet. He remarked that India is home to numerous religions, churches, and communities. If every group demanded ministerial representation, all 140 assembly members would need to be appointed as ministers. He urged that leaders should be chosen based on their qualifications rather than religious affiliation.

Chandy Oommen's Role

The metropolitan noted that Puthuppally MLA Chandy Oommen should not be viewed solely as a church member. He highlighted that Oommen is the son of former Chief Minister Oommen Chandy and a young leader who conducted a unique election campaign, winning by a substantial majority. Diascoros stated that leadership should consider the qualifications of those entering leadership positions, and voters expected Oommen to become a minister.

Church Dispute and Government Role

Diascoros emphasized that court rulings in the church dispute must be followed. He expressed hope that the new government would coordinate between both parties, understanding the essence of the ruling in a way that does not harm either side. A delegation from the Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church attended the swearing-in ceremony.

Jacobite Church's Support

Catholicos Baselios Joseph of the Jacobite Church offered full support, cooperation, and prayers for all good initiatives undertaken by the government for national welfare and progress. A delegation led by the catholicos met Chief Minister V D Satheesan before the swearing-in ceremony on Monday. Joseph prayed for abundant blessings upon the new government as it works dedicatedly for the comprehensive development of the state and the well-being of its people.
