Mamata Banerjee Reaffirms Commitment to Singur's Development
In a significant address at Singur, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee declared on Wednesday that industrialisation and agriculture would progress hand-in-hand in the region. This statement comes nearly two decades after her historic movement in Singur reshaped Bengal's political landscape, marking a pivotal moment in her career.
Balancing Industry and Agriculture
Speaking at the inauguration and foundation stone-laying ceremony for multiple development projects, Banerjee asserted, "Industrialisation will happen, but not at the cost of agriculture." She emphasized that her administration is dedicated to fostering economic growth while safeguarding the agricultural interests that are vital to the local community.
Development Initiatives and Employment Generation
The Chief Minister highlighted several key projects aimed at boosting the local economy. She announced the establishment of an agro-industrial park spanning over 8 acres of land in Singur, with an investment of Rs 9.2 crore. Additionally, a private industrial park has been commissioned, where e-commerce giants Amazon and Flipkart are set to establish warehouses. These initiatives are expected to generate employment opportunities for thousands of local youths, providing a much-needed economic boost to the area.
Banerjee also reassured the crowd that individuals who lost land in Singur continue to receive monthly financial assistance, underscoring her government's commitment to supporting affected families.
Criticism of BJP and Unfulfilled Promises
Without directly naming Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Banerjee took a sharp jab at the BJP-led central government. She contrasted her track record of delivering on promises with what she described as "false assurances from a teleprompter." Her remarks came just over two weeks after the Prime Minister addressed a rally in Singur, adding a layer of political tension to the event.
Banerjee accused the BJP of making empty promises, or "jumlas," and highlighted her own resolve by stating, "If I make a promise, I keep it at any cost." She further criticized the central government for withholding funds for essential schemes, including housing, roads, the 100-days' work program, water, and education, alleging that this has hindered developmental progress in Bengal.
Emotional Connection and Gratitude
Reflecting on her deep ties with Singur, Banerjee expressed heartfelt gratitude to the residents. She recalled spending extensive time in the region from 2006 to 2008, including staying on the streets and undertaking a 26-day hunger strike. "Singur is my favourite place," she said, acknowledging the support of protesters and individuals like Tapasi Malik, whom she described as inspirations.
Banerjee also condemned what she termed as attempts to "lynch the people of Bengal," asserting that such actions would not be rewarded at the ballot box. She added that she thrives under attack, showcasing her resilience in the face of political challenges.
Launch of New Schemes
During the event, Banerjee inaugurated the new phase of the Banglar Bari scheme and the Ghatal Master Plan. She announced an allocation of Rs 24,180 crore for the Banglar Bari scheme's second phase, aimed at benefiting farmers. For the Ghatal Master Plan, Rs 1,500 crore has been allocated, with work worth Rs 300 crore already completed out of an initial Rs 500 crore.
These announcements underscore the state government's focus on infrastructure and agricultural development, aligning with Banerjee's vision of a balanced and prosperous Singur.
