Manipur Deputy Chief Minister Meets Family of Deceased BJP MLA, Pledges Justice
In a solemn visit to Churachandpur on Monday, Manipur Deputy Chief Minister Losii Dikho extended his condolences to the family of BJP MLA Vungzagin Valte, who tragically passed away from injuries sustained in a mob attack on May 4, 2023. Valte had been undergoing treatment at a hospital in Gurugram and succumbed to his injuries on February 21, 2024.
Condolences and Government Assurance
During his visit, Dikho met with Valte's wife and children, presenting traditional shawls as a gesture of sympathy. He assured the grieving family of the government's unwavering commitment to delivering justice in this case. The deputy chief minister was accompanied by key officials, including Manipur Home Commissioner Ashok, District Commissioner Dharun Kumar S, and Superintendent of Police Saurav Dogra.
Engagement with Community Leaders
Following the family meeting, Dikho held a closed-door discussion with representatives of the Zomi Coordination Committee (ZCC) at the Paite Tribe Council Hall. On behalf of the state government, he expressed profound sorrow over Valte's death and emphasized the urgent need to expedite investigations into the circumstances surrounding the MLA's assault and the deaths of numerous others.
Dikho highlighted that future steps toward peace and a political solution would be pursued under the suspension of operations framework. However, he acknowledged that major policy decisions are currently pending due to an incomplete state cabinet.
Commitment to Dialogue and Dignified Burial
The deputy chief minister noted the concerns raised by the ZCC and promised to escalate them to the appropriate government level. Both parties agreed to maintain ongoing engagement, with written communication to outline the next steps. Dikho stressed the importance of ensuring a dignified burial for Valte, clarifying that while the ZCC is handling the case with the family's consent, the government remains dedicated to supporting them throughout the process.
Media Statements and Ongoing Efforts
Speaking to the media after the meeting, Dikho recounted, "We met the family in Delhi and extended all possible assistance to bring the body here. Today I came to offer my condolences and to assure that the government is committed to justice. Investigations have already begun." He added that discussions with the ZCC focused on advancing their demands and securing justice for the family and the broader community.
Addressing the delay in cabinet expansion, Dikho admitted that "all kinds of problems" persist and the situation remains unfavorable, but expressed optimism that expansion would occur soon. When questioned about displaced persons from the conflict that began on May 3, 2023, he stated that the government and various organizations are making "all possible efforts" to facilitate their safe return.
