In a significant boost to Bathinda's urban infrastructure, Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann on Saturday inaugurated the newly reconstructed Multania Railway Over Bridge (ROB). During the event, he also granted approval for the construction of another crucial ROB at Janta Nagar in the city.
Addressing Decades-Old Traffic Woes
Speaking at the inauguration ceremony, CM Mann highlighted the critical role the Multania bridge plays in connecting the divided population of Bathinda. The structure spans the busy Ambala, Delhi, Sirsa, and Bikaner railway lines. The Chief Minister pointed out that the previous bridge was nearly 35 years old and had become completely inadequate for the city's current traffic volume.
"With a narrow carriageway of just 23 feet and insufficient service road width, the old bridge was no longer suitable for the increasing volume of traffic," Mann stated. He acknowledged the long-standing demand from residents for the bridge's reconstruction. "Keeping the problems in mind, the state government decided to demolish the approaches of the old bridge and construct a new one on the existing pillars," he explained.
New Projects and Multi-Use Development
In a move that adds recreational value to the infrastructure upgrade, the space beneath the newly inaugurated Multania bridge will be transformed into a sports ground. The planned facilities include:
- A walking track
- Box cricket area
- Skating zone
- Basketball court
- Gym space
Shifting focus to future projects, Mann announced that the Punjab government has approved the construction of a new Railway Over Bridge at Janta Nagar. The project is estimated to cost approximately Rs 51 crore. The proposed bridge will be 650 metres long with a wider 31-foot carriageway. To further improve traffic flow, the adjoining service road will be expanded from 18 feet to 33 feet.
Broader Focus on Education and Outcomes
Concluding his address, the Chief Minister connected the infrastructure development to the state's wider goals, particularly in education. He emphasized that while school infrastructure is being upgraded, a parallel effort is underway to enhance the skills and expertise of teachers. This dual approach, he said, is essential to ensure better learning outcomes for students across Punjab.
The inauguration and new approval mark a concerted push by the state government to modernize Bathinda's transport network, addressing both immediate congestion issues and long-term urban planning needs.
