Punjab CM Bhagwant Mann Seeks Live Telecast for Jan 15 Akal Takht Appearance
Mann Requests Live Telecast for Akal Takht Summons on Jan 15

In a significant development, Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann has formally requested a live telecast of his scheduled appearance before the Akal Takht secretariat in Amritsar on January 15. This move comes after the Sikh temporal seat summoned him to explain his recent public statements.

The Summons and the Request for Transparency

The summons was issued on January 5 by Akal Takht officiating jathedar Giani Kuldeep Singh Gargaj. The religious authority called upon the Chief Minister to clarify his recent remarks concerning the Sikh code of conduct, or Rehat Maryada, and his public advice asking people to refrain from putting money in donation boxes, known as Golak.

Amidst the ongoing standoff between the Punjab government and Sikh religious institutions, Mann took to social media platform X to make his request public. He stated that he had been inundated with messages from the global Sikh community, or sangat. The community expressed a desire to witness his explanation live.

In posts written in Punjabi and Hindi, Mann wrote, "I am getting messages from all over the world that on Jan 15, when I go along with accounts of the ‘Golak' on behalf of the sangat, there should be a live telecast on all channels." He added, "In keeping with the sentiments of the worldwide sangat, I request the Jathedar sahib to telecast my clarification live so that the sangat remains connected moment by moment and penny by penny... See you on Jan 15... with evidence."

CM Mann's Public Commitment

Later, while addressing an event in Ludhiana, the Chief Minister reiterated his commitment to appear before the Akal Takht. He was interacting with newly elected members of the zila parishads and block samitis, alongside AAP national convener Arvind Kejriwal.

Mann emphasized the sacred stature of the Akal Takht for Sikhs. "I will appear there not as a chief minister, but as a humble and devout Sikh," he declared. He further stated, "Sri Akal Takht Sahib is sacred for every Sikh and is the highest temporal seat of our community. Even though the President of the country will be visiting Guru Nanak Dev University, Amritsar, I will still ensure my presence before Sri Akal Takht Sahib."

Broader Context and Implications

This episode highlights the delicate interface between political authority and religious institutions in Punjab. The Chief Minister's call for a live telecast is seen as an attempt to ensure transparency and directly communicate with the global Sikh populace. By promising to present evidence, Mann is positioning his appearance as a detailed accounting rather than a mere explanation.

The outcome of this January 15 appearance is keenly awaited, as it has the potential to influence the relationship between the state's elected government and one of Sikhism's most revered institutions. Mann's approach underscores a modern demand for public accountability, even in matters of religious discourse.
