A couple in Meerut has ended their marriage through mutual divorce after a series of disputes that began with minor disagreements. According to Ahmad, a relative involved in the mediation, the disagreements escalated into frequent conflicts, eventually reaching the village panchayat. Despite efforts from relatives and community members to reconcile the couple, no mutually acceptable solution could be found.
Allegations of Unfulfilled Promises
Nafisa, the wife, alleged that her husband Qamruddin failed to keep promises made before their nikah. She claimed he had assured her that his granddaughters would cook meals for her and take care of her. However, within days of the marriage, she was made to live in a separate house, contrary to the initial agreement.
Failed Reconciliation Attempts
Ahmad stated that he tried to save the marriage by encouraging both parties to sit together and discuss their differences, but these efforts did not succeed. "Both of them mutually agreed to divorce, and neither side went to court," Ahmad said. After the divorce, Nafisa returned to live with her daughter in the Nagina area.
Nehtaur SHO Ravindra Pratap Singh confirmed that the couple settled the matter mutually within the village, without involving the legal system. The case highlights how local panchayats continue to play a role in resolving marital disputes in rural areas.
