Mizoram Minister Inspects Quarry Collapse Site, Pledges Support
Mizoram's Disaster Management and Rehabilitation Minister Lalnilawma made a crucial visit to Sihphir Neihbawih on Monday. This site witnessed a devastating stone quarry collapse just days earlier on Friday. The tragic incident resulted in one confirmed fatality, left one worker injured, and trapped two other individuals beneath the rubble. Those missing include one person from the Chakma community and another from Jharkhand. Rescue teams continue their desperate search for them.
Minister Expresses Shock and Condolences
During his on-site inspection, Minister Lalnilawma expressed profound shock over the collapse. He conveyed his heartfelt condolences directly to the grieving families. The minister also extended his sympathies to the entire community of Sihphir village, acknowledging their collective loss.
Lalnilawma commended the relentless rescue operations aimed at locating the two trapped workers. He publicly thanked the local villagers, members of the Young Mizo Association (YMA), and the dedicated personnel from the Quick Response Team (QRT) and the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF). The minister praised their tireless and coordinated efforts in the face of adversity.
Swift Response and Ongoing Operations
Officials confirmed that authorities reported the collapse promptly. Teams from the Additional District Disaster Management Authority (ADDMA), the DM&R department, the QRT, and the NDRF were immediately deployed to the scene. The central YMA and numerous local volunteers have provided unwavering support to the rescue mission from the very beginning.
The operation is under close supervision. Officials from the Aizawl Deputy Commissioner's office, the Disaster Management department, and the Geology and Mining Department are monitoring progress continuously. The quarry collapse initially trapped four workers. One victim, identified as Muana from Manipur, tragically lost his life. Another worker sustained injuries and is currently receiving medical treatment.
Financial Assistance for Rescue Efforts
As a tangible gesture of the state government's support, Minister Lalnilawma handed over Rs 10,000 to the leaders of Sihphir village. This financial aid is intended to help cover essential expenses related to the ongoing rescue operations, ensuring teams have the resources they need.
Earlier visits to the site were also made by State Home Minister K Sapdanga and Forest Minister Lalthansanga. Both ministers had similarly extended financial assistance to the village leadership, demonstrating a unified government response to the disaster.
The community remains hopeful as rescue teams work against time. The focus stays on locating the two missing workers and providing all necessary support to the affected families.
