In the political landscape of Karnataka, where a spouse's position often leads to a life of influence, one woman from Belagavi district is charting a profoundly different course. Rukmini Halagekar, the wife of Khanapur MLA Vitthal Halagekar, has steadfastly continued her work as an anganwadi teacher for over three decades, choosing the classroom over the comforts associated with public life.
A Day in the Life: Rhymes Over Privileges
Every morning at 9 am, Rukmini Halagekar walks to Anganwadi Centre No. 149 in Topinakatti village. Her day is not filled with political meetings or social gatherings, but with the lively sounds of nursery rhymes, playful activities, and the eager chatter of toddlers. She returns home by 4:30 pm, her fulfillment derived not from her husband's political stature but from the simple joy of shaping young minds.
"I have been a teacher since 1992," Rukmini stated. "My husband becoming an MLA does not change my duty. These children are my world." For over 33 years, she has been an integral part of the anganwadi system, also assisting rural families in accessing key government welfare schemes like Bhagyalakshmi and Gruha Lakshmi.
Beyond Duty: A Lifesaving Sacrifice and Shared Values
Rukmini Halagekar's commitment extends far beyond her professional responsibilities. When her husband Vitthal faced kidney failure, she did not hesitate to donate one of her own kidneys to him. "She gave me a second life. I can never repay her," an emotional Vitthal Halagekar shared. This act of profound love underscores the depth of their partnership.
Vitthal Halagekar, a former headmaster with BSc and BEd degrees, retired in January 2023 before successfully contesting the assembly polls on a BJP ticket, after a narrow defeat in 2018. He often credits his wife's unwavering humility and dedication for keeping him grounded in his new role. "Power is temporary. Good work lasts forever," he remarked, reflecting on the values they both hold dear.
The Community's Voice: Simplicity and Warmth Above All
Locals in Topinakatti village and the wider Khanapur area speak highly of Rukmini's unassuming nature. Fellow anganwadi teacher Jyoti Bacholkar noted, "She is more of a friend than an MLA's wife." Gram panchayat member Laxman Tiraveer added, "She treats every child like her own." Despite the couple having no children of their own, Rukmini considers every child at the anganwadi as part of her family and intends to continue teaching until retirement.
