The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has secured a clear majority in the Mohali Municipal Corporation elections, winning 25 out of 50 seats. The counting of votes, which began at 8 AM on Wednesday, concluded with AAP emerging as the single largest party.
Key Results
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) won 12 seats, while the Congress secured 8 seats. The Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) managed to win 3 seats, and Independent candidates won the remaining 2 seats. The results mark a significant victory for AAP, which had campaigned on promises of better civic amenities and transparency.
Winners and Losers
Among the prominent winners, AAP candidate Rajinder Singh won from Ward 5 with a margin of 1,200 votes. BJP's candidate Sunita Sharma lost her deposit in Ward 12. Congress candidate Gurpreet Singh won from Ward 8 but by a narrow margin of 200 votes.
The voter turnout was recorded at 65%, which was slightly lower than the previous election. The election was held in a single phase on Sunday, with strict COVID-19 protocols in place.
Reactions
AAP leader Arvind Kejriwal congratulated the party workers and said that the victory reflects the public's trust in AAP's governance model. BJP spokesperson said that the party will analyze the results and work on improving its performance in future elections. Congress leader Navjot Singh Sidhu expressed disappointment but congratulated the winners.
The newly elected council will now elect the Mayor and Deputy Mayor in a meeting scheduled for next week. The term of the new corporation will be five years.
