Nagpur Mayor Takes Swift Action on Unauthorized Tree Cutting Complaint
In a decisive move to protect the city's green cover, Nagpur Mayor Neeta Thakre has directed the civic administration to issue a formal notice to a contractor accused of carrying out unauthorized tree cutting in the Surya Nagar area under Prabhag 24. This action comes in response to a serious complaint lodged by office-bearers of the Surya Nagar Welfare Society, who alleged that extensive tree cutting was being conducted under the misleading guise of routine trimming operations.
Mayor's On-Site Inspection and Immediate Directives
Taking prompt cognisance of the residents' concerns, Mayor Thakre personally visited Surya Nagar to conduct a thorough review of the situation. During her detailed inspection, she observed the alleged damage and immediately instructed municipal officials to serve a showcause notice to the contractor responsible for the unauthorized tree cutting activities. The mayor emphasized that such actions, undertaken without proper permission, are a clear violation of civic regulations and environmental norms.
Mayor Thakre has also issued specific directives to the garden department to obtain comprehensive details from the Kalamna police station regarding the vehicle used to transport the cut wood. This step is aimed at gathering crucial evidence to support further legal and administrative action against the contractor. The mayor stressed the importance of a coordinated effort between municipal departments and law enforcement to ensure accountability and prevent future violations.
Compensatory Plantation Ordered to Mitigate Environmental Impact
In addition to the punitive measures, Mayor Thakre has mandated that the contractor undertake compensatory plantation as a means to offset the environmental damage caused by the unauthorized tree cutting. The directive specifies that saplings must be planted in proportion to the age and ecological value of the trees that were illegally removed. This requirement underscores the administration's commitment to not only penalize violations but also to actively restore and enhance the city's green infrastructure.
The mayor's proactive response highlights the growing importance of community vigilance and civic engagement in urban environmental protection. Residents of Surya Nagar have welcomed the swift action, expressing hope that it will serve as a deterrent against similar unauthorized activities in the future. The case is now under active investigation, with municipal authorities closely monitoring compliance with the issued directives to ensure full implementation of the corrective measures.
