Nagpur Police Launch Pre-Election Crackdown on Illegal Liquor Trade
Nagpur Police took decisive action this week to ensure free and fair elections for the Nagpur Municipal Corporation. The police conducted a special drive targeting the illegal liquor trade on January 14 and 15.
Drive Aligns with State-Wide Dry Days
This initiative came in view of the state-wide dry days declared from January 13 to 16. Authorities registered a total of 24 cases against 25 individuals under Section 65(E) of the Maharashtra Prohibition Act.
During the operation, police seized illicit liquor and related materials valued at approximately ₹5.68 lakh. The confiscated items included hundreds of bottles of country liquor, primarily in 90 ml and 180 ml sizes labeled as 'Orange' or 'Santri'.
Significant Seizures Made in Key Cases
Officials reported recovering substantial quantities in several instances. One accused yielded 435 bottles, while another had 400 bottles seized from their possession.
The seizure also encompassed some foreign liquor, cash amounts, a mobile phone, and a four-wheeler allegedly used for transporting the contraband. Police emphasized that these measures aim to prevent any undue influence during the upcoming civic polls scheduled for Thursday.
This crackdown demonstrates the police department's commitment to maintaining law and order ahead of the crucial municipal elections. Residents have noted increased police visibility across Nagpur as authorities work to curb illegal activities that could disrupt the electoral process.
