Heavy rains have been pounding several areas in the Nilgiris district for an entire week now. This persistent downpour has triggered multiple incidents of treefalls and landslides across the region. Normal life has been severely disrupted as a result.
Significant Rainfall Recorded in Coonoor
Coonoor and its nearby areas received a substantial 109mm of rainfall by 7am on January 13. The intense weather conditions have led to dangerous situations on the ground.
Major Treefall Incident Damages Vehicles
A large tree came crashing down on Darlington Bridge in Coonoor this Monday. The falling tree damaged as many as five vehicles, including cars and motorcycles. Firefighters and electricity department personnel quickly arrived at the scene. They worked together to clear the fallen tree from the bridge.
Landslides Block Key Roads
A landslide occurred on the important Coonoor-Mettupalayam Road. Authorities used an earth mover to clear the debris and restore the route. Additional landslides were reported in Indira Nagar and Gandhipuram areas along the Coonoor-Mettupalayam national highway.
These landslides caused significant traffic disruption. Vehicles traveling to Mettupalayam and Ooty had to be diverted. They took an alternative route through Katteri and Palada instead.
Public Infrastructure Also Affected
The heavy rains damaged a public toilet building in the affected area. Highway department officials remain actively engaged in clearing operations. They are working continuously to remove debris from multiple landslide sites.
The situation remains challenging as rainfall continues in the Nilgiris district. Emergency teams stay on high alert to respond to further incidents.
