Cockfighting Spreads to Vijayawada Outskirts Ahead of Sankranti; Police Crack Down
Police Crack Down on Illegal Cockfighting Rings in Andhra Pradesh

With the Sankranti festival approaching, authorities in Andhra Pradesh are confronting a worrying trend: the illegal practice of cockfighting, traditionally confined to rural areas, is now spreading to the outskirts of major cities like Vijayawada. Under the cover of traditional celebrations, organizers are setting up makeshift arenas in open fields on urban fringes, often with alleged backing from influential figures.

Police Take a Firm Stand and Launch Pre-emptive Strikes

Law enforcement agencies have adopted a zero-tolerance policy. Eluru District Superintendent of Police K Pratap Shiva Kishore issued a stern warning, clarifying that organizing cockfighting and associated gambling during festivals is a punishable offence. He emphasized that strict legal action would be pursued against organizers, financiers, and participants alike, regardless of their social or political influence. The police have intensified surveillance and initiated pre-emptive operations to dismantle these illegal setups before they can become operational.

In a significant crackdown, teams led by Nuziveedu rural inspector K Rama Krishna and Chatrai sub-inspector D Rama Krishna took action in Krishna Rao Palem village of Chatrai mandal. With support from revenue and panchayat personnel, they used a tractor to destroy structures specifically erected for hosting cockfights. This operation sent a clear message about the police's intent to curb the activity.

Raid on Cockfighting Knife Factory Exposes Supply Chain

In a parallel development highlighting the organized nature of this illegal trade, police in Nuziveedu town conducted a targeted raid. Acting on credible intelligence, a team led by Town Inspector Satya Srinivas stormed a factory manufacturing knives used exclusively for cockfighting. The raid was highly successful, resulting in:

  • The arrest of one individual.
  • Seizure of 131 specialized cockfighting knives.
  • Confiscation of a motor and other equipment used in production.

A case has been registered, and legal proceedings are now underway. This raid struck at a key supply chain element supporting the brutal sport.

Authorities Urge Peaceful and Lawful Celebrations

Amidst these enforcement actions, police authorities are appealing to the public. SP K Pratap Shiva Kishore has urged residents to celebrate the Sankranti festival peacefully and in accordance with lawful traditions. The police stance underscores a commitment to maintaining public order and preventing cruelty to animals and illegal gambling, which often accompany such events. The crackdown across the Eluru district and Nuziveedu serves as a potent reminder that cultural pretext will not shield illegal activities from the law.
