Karnataka Minister Priyank Kharge's recent remarks praising the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) have stirred a political controversy, with Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP K Sudhakar alleging that the comments were intended to impress Congress leader Rahul Gandhi.
Sudhakar's Accusation
Speaking to media, Sudhakar said, "There was no need for Priyank Kharge to show such enthusiasm about the RSS. It is clear that he is trying to gain favor with Rahul Gandhi by making these statements." The BJP MP further questioned the timing and intent behind Kharge's praise for the RSS, which is traditionally viewed as an ideological opponent of the Congress party.
Kharge's Remarks
Priyank Kharge, the Congress leader and Karnataka's Minister for Rural Development and Panchayat Raj, had earlier commended the RSS for its social work, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic. He stated that the organization's contributions should be acknowledged, regardless of political differences.
However, his comments were met with criticism from within his own party, with some Congress members expressing discomfort over the praise for an organization that has long been associated with the BJP.
Political Reactions
The BJP has seized the opportunity to highlight divisions within the Congress. Sudhakar's remarks are part of a broader strategy to portray the Congress as internally conflicted and opportunistic. Meanwhile, Congress leaders have downplayed the controversy, emphasizing that Kharge's comments were about recognizing humanitarian work, not endorsing the RSS's ideology.
The incident has added fuel to the ongoing political rivalry in Karnataka, with both parties trading barbs ahead of upcoming elections.
