Sharad Pawar Voices Support for Sunetra Pawar's New Role, Slams Fadnavis Over Merger Comments

In a significant development from Baramati, Nationalist Congress Party (Sharadchandra Pawar) chief Sharad Pawar on Wednesday expressed his contentment that Sunetra Pawar received the opportunity to assume the position of deputy chief minister of the NCP. This follows the tragic demise of his nephew, Ajit Pawar, in a recent plane crash. Pawar, while addressing the media upon his return from Mumbai, highlighted this as a positive step amidst the family's grief.

Pawar's Absence from Parliament and Focus on Family

The veteran politician cancelled his planned visit to Delhi to participate in the Parliament session, opting instead to return to Baramati. Reflecting on his extensive political career, Pawar remarked, "Be it the Lok Sabha, Rajya Sabha or the Assembly, I have been a member of these houses for 58 years, but for the first time, I could not attend the budget session due to the tragedy of Ajit Pawar’s death." This underscores the profound impact of the loss on his political engagements.

When questioned about the timing of the oath-taking ceremony for Sunetra Pawar, which occurred just three days after Ajit Pawar's passing and was organized by NCP working president Praful Patel and state chief Sunil Tatkare, Pawar chose not to comment directly. However, he reiterated, "I am happy that she got the opportunity," emphasizing his support for her new role without delving into the procedural aspects.

Sharp Criticism of Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis

In a pointed critique, Sharad Pawar took aim at Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis for his remarks regarding the merger of the two NCP factions. Pawar asserted, "He was not involved in the merger discussions, and therefore, I do not think he has any right to speak on the matter." This statement highlights the ongoing political tensions and Pawar's firm stance on keeping external parties out of internal party affairs.

Elaborating on the merger talks, Pawar revealed that the discussions were primarily conducted between Ajit Pawar and former state chief of NCP (SP) Jayant Patil. With Ajit Pawar's untimely death, the focus has shifted, as Pawar noted, "Currently, our family’s focus is on supporting each other during this tough time. We are not discussing politics at the moment." This indicates a period of mourning and solidarity within the Pawar family, temporarily sidelining political maneuvers.

Dismissal of Foul Play Allegations in Plane Crash

Addressing speculations surrounding the plane crash that claimed Ajit Pawar's life, the NCP (SP) chief firmly dismissed any doubts of foul play. This clarification aims to quell rumors and provide assurance regarding the circumstances of the tragic incident, reinforcing the family's desire for privacy and respect during their bereavement.

The developments underscore a critical juncture for the NCP, with leadership transitions and internal dynamics coming to the fore amidst personal loss. Pawar's statements reflect a blend of familial support and political assertiveness, shaping the narrative around the party's future direction.
