Sharavathi project not cleared by expert panel, Karnataka HC told

The Karnataka High Court was informed on Thursday that the proposed Sharavathi storage project has not received clearance from the expert appraisal committee. Considering this report, a Division Bench comprising Chief Justice Vibhu Bakhru and Justice K S Hemalekha extended the interim order granted on March 10 until October 1.

Background of the Case

The interim order was initially issued in March to maintain the status quo regarding the project. The court was hearing a petition challenging the project's environmental clearance. The expert panel's lack of approval was a key point raised by the petitioners.

Expert Committee's Stand

The expert appraisal committee, which reviews environmental impacts, has not given its nod for the project. This was conveyed to the court during the hearing. The committee's report highlighted several concerns that need to be addressed before any clearance can be granted.

Next Hearing Scheduled

The court has listed the matter for further hearing on October 1. Until then, the interim order will remain in effect, preventing any construction or preparatory activities at the site. The petitioners argued that the project could cause significant ecological damage.
