Outgoing Shivamogga DC Gurudatta Hegde Stresses Tourism for Job Creation
Shivamogga DC Gurudatta Hegde Highlights Tourism & Land Issues

In his final address as Shivamogga's top administrator, outgoing Deputy Commissioner Gurudatta Hegde placed a strong emphasis on leveraging tourism as a key driver for employment generation in the district. Speaking at a farewell event on Friday, Hegde reflected on his tenure, describing it as both challenging and inspiring.

Focus on Eco-Tourism and Development Hurdles

Gurudatta Hegde detailed the ongoing efforts to boost the local tourism sector, including specific initiatives in eco-tourism. He pointed out that promoting Shivamogga's natural and cultural assets is vital for creating sustainable job opportunities for the region's residents.

However, his tenure was not without significant obstacles. He openly highlighted the persistent challenges related to land acquisition for major infrastructure projects, such as railway and national highway construction. These issues have been a recurring hurdle in the district's development trajectory.

Addressing Legacy Issues: Sharavathi Dam and Health

A major focus of his concluding remarks was the long-pending matter concerning villagers displaced by the Sharavathi dam construction. Hegde expressed confidence that his successor would find resolutions for those who lost their land. He revealed that a comprehensive digital survey covering nearly 9,900 acres of land has been completed.

"We did a quality survey, and we are addressing the objections. We will submit the report to the government soon," Hegde stated, indicating that the process is in its final stages.

Furthermore, he shed light on critical gaps in the region's healthcare system, notably the shortage of doctors and ambulances, and the threat of Kyasanur Forest Disease (KFD). These are issues he plans to tackle head-on in his new role.

A New Chapter in Public Service

Gurudatta Hegde has been transferred and will now serve as the Commissioner of Health and Family Welfare Services for the state. Concurrently, he has also been appointed as the Managing Director of the Karnataka State Medical Supply Corporation Limited.

Formally concluding his duties in Shivamogga, he handed over charge to the new Deputy Commissioner, Prabhuling Kavalikatti, at the DC office. His departure marks the end of a tenure focused on development challenges and sets the stage for his focused approach on state-wide health concerns.
