Shubham Sharma has taken a lead of nearly 4,000 votes over his closest rival Gagandeep Jalalpur in the election for the president of the Punjab Youth Congress (PYC). The final vote count shows Shubham with 1,60,154 votes, while Jalalpur polled 1,56,271 votes.
Background of the candidates
Shubham currently serves as the general secretary of the PYC. He hails from Dhuri in Sangrur district and is backed by prominent Congress leaders, including Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee (PPCC) chief Amrinder Sing Raja Warring and former Deputy Chief Minister Sukhjinder Randhawa. A senior party leader noted that prominent Congress Hindu leader Vijay Inder Singla also hails from Sangrur, indicating a regional stronghold.
Gagandeep Jalalpur, the son of former MLA Madan Lal Jalalpur, was supported by a faction led by former Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi. Despite a strong campaign, he fell short by 3,883 votes.
Third place and other candidates
Karamvir Dhillon finished third with 94,181 votes. He was backed by Congress Legislature Party (CLP) leader Partap Singh Bajwa and former MLA Balbir Singh Sidhu. The election saw a competitive field, but Shubham emerged victorious with a clear margin.
Next steps
The final announcement of the new PYC president will be made by the Indian Youth Congress after conducting interviews of the top three vote-getters. Until then, Mohit Mohindra will continue to hold the charge of the post. The election results reflect the internal dynamics within the Punjab Congress, with various factions supporting different candidates.
