Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah resigned from his post on Thursday after the Congress high command reportedly asked him to step down, paving the way for Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar to take over the top post. Siddaramaiah stated that he had earlier maintained he would resign if directed by the party leadership and acted accordingly after meetings in Delhi.
Background of the Resignation
The development followed back-to-back discussions involving Rahul Gandhi, Mallikarjun Kharge, and other senior Congress leaders. Siddaramaiah expressed gratitude to Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi, and Kharge for giving him the opportunity to serve twice as Karnataka chief minister and leader of the opposition. He emphasized that his decision was based on the party's directive and his commitment to party discipline.
Party Unity and Celebrations
Soon after the resignation, the Karnataka Congress shared visuals projecting unity between Siddaramaiah and Shivakumar. Celebrations erupted outside Shivakumar’s Bengaluru residence as supporters distributed sweets. The party is expected to formally announce Shivakumar's appointment as the new chief minister shortly.
This transition marks a significant shift in Karnataka's political landscape, with Shivakumar poised to lead the state ahead of upcoming elections. The Congress leadership has been working to ensure a smooth handover and maintain party cohesion.
