Siddaramaiah resigns as Karnataka CM, Shivakumar to succeed

Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah announced his decision to step down during a breakfast meeting at his official residence 'Kaveri' on Thursday, paving the way for Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar to take over the top post. The meeting, attended by several cabinet ministers, brought an end to months of speculation over the leadership transition in the state.

Breakfast Meeting at Kaveri

Siddaramaiah convened the gathering at his residence, inviting ministers to discuss the government's achievements and his planned resignation. According to sources, he informed the cabinet colleagues of his intention to step down, which was met with acceptance. The meeting took place shortly after the Congress government completed three years in office.

Shivakumar's Gesture of Respect

Upon arriving at the residence, DK Shivakumar embraced Siddaramaiah warmly and then touched his feet, seeking blessings. This gesture, captured in photographs released by both leaders' offices, underscored the smooth transition of power. The Karnataka Congress shared the images on social media with the caption, "That day, this day, forever... Unity is our strength! Public service is our eternal commitment!"

Confirmation from Minister HK Patil

After the meeting, Minister HK Patil confirmed to reporters that Siddaramaiah would formally resign at 3:00 PM, and DK Shivakumar would be elevated as the next chief minister. "Chief Minister will resign at 3 o'clock. CM Siddaramaiah said that we will make DK Shivakumar the new CM, he will become the CM," Patil stated.

Possible Visit to Delhi

There were indications that Siddaramaiah might travel to New Delhi to seek the Congress high command's approval on the selection of deputy chief ministers in the new government. This move would ensure a smooth transition and party consensus.

Ministers Present at the Meeting

Senior ministers including Priyank Kharge, KJ George, MB Patil, Ramalinga Reddy, and HK Patil attended the breakfast meeting. Security around the residence was tightened in anticipation of the political developments. The gathering marked a significant moment in Karnataka politics, with all eyes on the leadership change.

Celebrations Outside Shivakumar's Residence

As news of Siddaramaiah's decision spread, celebrations erupted outside DK Shivakumar's residence in Bengaluru. Supporters distributed sweets and expressed joy over his impending elevation. Former MP DK Suresh, Shivakumar's brother, also arrived at the residence amid growing political activity.

Reactions from Leaders

State Home Minister G Parameshwara said Siddaramaiah invited ministers to thank them before stepping down. When asked about Siddaramaiah's future role, Parameshwara stated that any decision on national politics or a Rajya Sabha seat would be taken by the Congress high command. In Kalaburagi, Indian Youth Congress workers performed a special puja at the Shri Sharana Basaveshwara Temple, demanding that Priyank Kharge be appointed deputy chief minister under Shivakumar.

The transition marks a new chapter for Karnataka, with DK Shivakumar set to lead the state government, ending the prolonged tussle over the chief minister's chair.
