Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) president Sukhbir Singh Badal on Saturday condemned the Punjab government's revised land pooling scheme as a fresh attempt to dispossess farmers of their land. He declared that his party would vehemently oppose the policy and prevent any injustice to the farming community.
Badal terms revised policy as cosmetic
Speaking to the media, Badal accused the state government of introducing only superficial changes to the earlier land pooling scheme, which he claimed had already been rejected by farmers. He alleged that the revised policy was being pushed through under pressure from AAP national convenor Arvind Kejriwal to benefit large builders.
Wheat distribution to fire-affected families
Earlier in the day, Badal distributed 600 quintals of wheat among 140 families from Gurusar, Pakki Tibbi, and Kabarwala villages in the Lambi Assembly constituency. The beneficiaries had suffered severe losses after their standing wheat crop was destroyed in a major fire about two months ago. The affected farmers expressed gratitude to Badal for the assistance.
Political implications
The SAD chief's strong stance comes amid ongoing political tensions in Punjab over land acquisition policies. The revised land pooling scheme is seen as a key issue for the upcoming elections, with opposition parties criticizing the government's approach to land rights.
