Telangana Ramps Up Enforcement Against Illegal Sand Mining Operations
In a significant move to curb environmental and regulatory violations, the Telangana government has launched a comprehensive crackdown on illegal sand mining across the state. This intensified enforcement drive follows a direct directive from Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy, who ordered a Criminal Investigation Department (CID) probe into illicit mining activities.
Surprise Inspections Yield Substantial Seizures
Over the past six months, vigilance and enforcement officials have conducted 26 surprise inspections spanning 14 mandals in eight districts: Medak, Jangaon, Hanumakonda, Karimnagar, Nizamabad, Narayanpet, Mahbubnagar, and Khammam. These operations have resulted in the seizure of 2,131 metric tonnes of illegally mined sand, along with heavy machinery including 10 excavators, 6 trucks, and 39 tractors used in unauthorized operations.
Legal Actions and Penalties Escalate
The enforcement push has led to the registration of 18 First Information Reports (FIRs) related to illegal sand mining and transportation, with three cases filed in March alone. Based on complaints from vigilance officials, FIRs have been registered in Karimnagar, Warangal, Medak, Nizamabad, and Mahbubnagar districts. Legal proceedings have been initiated against 70 accused under multiple statutes, including the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, Mines and Minerals (Development and Regulation) Act, Prevention of Damage to Public Property Act, and the Motor Vehicles Act.
In 2025, the mining department processed 85 cases concerning illegal sand mining and transport, imposing penalties totaling Rs 51 lakh on offenders. The crackdown extends beyond sand mining to include quarrying operations, where 15 inspections at stone and metal quarries revealed approximately 30 lakh metric tonnes of material excavated beyond permitted limits or from encroached land. Authorities have levied penalties of Rs 30 crore on violators through the mining department.
Historical Probe and Government Commitment
The current enforcement surge aligns with the Congress government's decision to investigate illegal mining activities dating back to June 2, 2014—the date of Telangana's formation. This historical probe underscores the administration's commitment to addressing long-standing regulatory breaches and environmental degradation caused by unauthorized extraction of natural resources.
"The intensified ground operations reflect our zero-tolerance policy toward illegal mining," stated a vigilance and enforcement official. "We are systematically targeting both extraction and transportation networks to dismantle these unlawful operations."
As enforcement agencies continue to step up inspections, seizures, and criminal cases, the Telangana government aims to establish stricter oversight and deter future violations in the mining sector, protecting both public resources and environmental integrity.
