The Trinamool Congress (TMC) cancelled a scheduled meeting of its legislators on Monday after a majority of MLAs failed to attend. Party sources attributed the mass absence to the fallout from the recent attack on TMC national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee.
Party Announces Protest Escalation
Following the cancellation, senior TMC leader Kalyan Banerjee announced that the party has decided to heighten protests against the Suvendu Adhikari-led Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government in West Bengal over the next 48 hours. He stated that two key decisions were communicated to party workers to intensify the agitation.
Background of the Attack
Abhishek Banerjee, the nephew of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, was attacked on May 28 while returning from a political rally in East Midnapore. The incident has sparked widespread condemnation from TMC leaders, who have accused the state government of failing to maintain law and order. The party has demanded a thorough investigation and strict action against the perpetrators.
The TMC has organized several protests since the attack, including a march to the governor's house and a boycott of state assembly proceedings. The latest decision to escalate protests comes amid growing tension between the ruling TMC and the opposition BJP in the state.
Political analysts see the attack and subsequent protests as a significant flashpoint ahead of the 2026 West Bengal assembly elections. The TMC has been accusing the BJP of encouraging political violence, while the BJP has denied any involvement and called for a fair probe.
