In a significant move to decongest Trichy's road network and improve public transport, state ministers K N Nehru and Anbil Mahesh Poyyamozhi officially initiated the construction of the much-anticipated Thiruverumbur satellite bus terminus. The foundation stone was laid on Saturday at the old union office complex in Thiruverumbur, marking the start of a project expected to be completed by July 2027.
Project Details and Infrastructure Scope
The new terminus will be developed on one acre of land and is designed with substantial facilities. It will feature a 2,430 square meter cement concrete paved area specifically for bus halting, allowing space for 10 buses to be accommodated at a time. In addition to its transport function, the terminus will include 16 commercial outlets, aiming to create a hub of activity. Initially, the plan is to operate city buses from this location, but Municipal Administration Minister K N Nehru stated that efforts would be made to extend services to include mofussil (inter-district) buses as well.
Addressing Traffic and Expanding City Services
A primary objective of this project is to alleviate traffic congestion on a key national highway. Once operational, the new terminus will allow for the removal of existing bus shelters that currently occupy parts of the service roads along the Trichy–Thanjavur National Highway. This shift is expected to significantly improve traffic flow. The terminus is strategically planned to serve residents from five newly added wards in the Thiruverumbur zone and will also cater to the transport requirements of neighboring panchayats on the city's outskirts.
Political Context and Broader Developments
During the event, Minister K N Nehru highlighted the government's investment in urban administration, noting that the state allocates an average of Rs 25,000 crore annually to the department. He also framed the project within the upcoming political cycle, urging elected representatives to diligently communicate such government initiatives to the public with an eye on the impending elections. In a related development earlier that day, the ministers inaugurated a new office for the Chief Education Officer (CEO) on VOC Road in Cantonment. This office space, which was formerly the Officers' Club, has been fully refurbished for its new educational administrative role.
The Thiruverumbur satellite bus terminus represents a concrete step in Trichy's urban infrastructure development, promising enhanced connectivity and reduced congestion for the growing city.
