Tragic Landslide Claims Life of Excavator Operator on Kailash Mansarovar Route

A devastating landslide during road-widening work on the strategic Kailash Mansarovar route in Pithoragarh district has resulted in the tragic death of a young excavator operator. The incident occurred on Wednesday when a massive boulder and debris buried both the machine and its operator, highlighting the perilous conditions faced by workers in mountainous terrain.

Details of the Fatal Incident

The victim has been identified as Manish Chaufal (32), a resident of Nachani village in Munsyari tehsil. He was operating an excavator at Mangti when a portion of rock suddenly cracked, triggering a sudden landslide that completely buried the heavy machinery and the operator beneath tons of earth and stone.

District disaster mitigation officer Bhupendra Singh Mahar confirmed that the accident took place on the 78-kilometer Tawaghat–Lipulekh road, approximately 35 kilometers from Tawaghat. This critical stretch was undergoing debris clearance operations as part of ongoing road-widening efforts to improve connectivity to the revered pilgrimage sites.

Rescue Operation and Aftermath

Local villagers and co-workers immediately alerted the Dharchula police station about the catastrophic accident. Swift response teams from the police, State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), and the revenue department rushed to the remote location to initiate a challenging rescue operation.

"The rescue operation continued for nearly six hours, after which the body was recovered," stated Officer Mahar, underscoring the difficult terrain and hazardous conditions that hampered recovery efforts. The deceased's body was subsequently transported to a hospital in Dharchula for postmortem examination.

Significant Disruption to Transportation

The massive landslide completely blocked the vital Tawaghat–Lipulekh road, leaving dozens of vehicles stranded and causing substantial inconvenience to commuters. Several travelers, including residents from Gala, Jipti, and Kuti villages, were forced to wait for hours until authorities could clear the obstructed route.

This road serves as a crucial connection to both Kailash Mansarovar and Adi Kailash, making it an essential artery for pilgrims, tourists, and local communities. The incident has raised serious concerns about safety protocols during construction activities in geologically unstable mountainous regions.

The tragic death of Manish Chaufal underscores the inherent dangers faced by infrastructure workers in Uttarakhand's challenging Himalayan landscape, where natural hazards frequently intersect with development projects.
