Worker Seriously Injured in Bomb Blast During Pond Restoration Work
A 51-year-old laborer, Kattala Appa Rao, sustained severe injuries on Monday when a country-made explosive device detonated unexpectedly during renovation activities at an ancient pond. The incident occurred on the outskirts of Kantakapalli village within Kottavalasa mandal of Vizianagaram district, sending shockwaves through the local community.
Bomb Intended for Wild Boars Causes Devastating Accident
Police investigators strongly suspect the improvised explosive was originally planted to deter wild boars that have been persistently ravaging crops in adjacent villages. These destructive animals frequently visit the area surrounding the Bhama Sagaram tank, prompting desperate measures from frustrated farmers.
At the moment of the explosion, approximately fifty workers were actively engaged in restoration efforts under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (NREGS). Miraculously, Appa Rao was the sole casualty when his crowbar struck the concealed bomb buried within the mud.
Severe Injuries from Glass-Filled Explosive Device
The country-made bomb, typically packed with lethal glass fragments and nails, caused extensive damage upon detonation. Appa Rao suffered profuse bleeding as sharp glass pieces penetrated multiple areas of his body, particularly affecting his hands and legs.
Emergency responders rushed the critically injured worker to Pendurthy Government Hospital where medical professionals worked diligently to stabilize his condition. Doctors confirmed he is now out of immediate danger but will remain under close observation for an extended period due to the severity of his wounds.
Police Issue Stern Warning Against Dangerous Practices
Kottavalasa Circle Inspector Shanmukha Rao revealed that authorities have repeatedly cautioned local residents against deploying such hazardous explosives to protect agricultural lands from wildlife intrusion. The police have now vowed to implement stringent legal action against anyone found using these dangerous devices henceforth.
"We have warned locals before about planting bombs to prevent wild animals from entering their agricultural lands, and we will initiate strict action from now on," Inspector Rao emphasized, highlighting the grave risks such methods pose to human safety.
NREGS Initiative for Water Conservation Continues
The renovation work forms part of a broader governmental initiative to restore and revitalize aging village reservoirs across the state through the NREGS program. These comprehensive projects aim to:
- Significantly enhance water storage capacity
- Provide crucial support for irrigation systems
- Improve agricultural livelihoods in rural communities
Despite this unfortunate incident, officials emphasize that such infrastructure development remains vital for sustainable rural development and water security in the region.
