Yogi Government Takes Action Against Excise Officer in Noida
The Yogi Adityanath government sent a strong message to gazetted officials across Uttar Pradesh on Friday. It suspended the district excise officer of Gautam Budh Nagar, Subodh Kumar. This action came after multiple complaints about overcharging at liquor shops in the area.
Repeated Complaints and Official Negligence
Senior officials recommended action against Subodh Kumar. They stated that complaints regarding overcharging kept emerging from the district repeatedly. Customers visiting liquor shops consistently reported being charged more than the maximum retail price printed on bottles, tetra packs, and beer cans.
Despite clear instructions to curb this malpractice, no improvement occurred on the ground. Kumar, who oversaw key areas like Noida, Greater Noida, and rural parts of the district, faced accountability for his slow response to these complaints. Authorities suspended him for dereliction of duties.
Inquiry Confirms Wrongdoing
A detailed inquiry is currently underway. However, action against Subodh Kumar proceeded after the investigation confirmed instances of overcharging and negligence on his part. These probes took place within the past year, highlighting ongoing issues.
In the past, similar complaints surfaced from the Meerut administrative division. At that time, the deputy excise commissioner Rakesh Singh received orders to submit a detailed report on the matter.
Government Issues Stern Warning
Excise Minister Nitin Agarwal issued a warning to other officials deputed in Ghaziabad, Meerut, and other parts of western Uttar Pradesh. He directed them to initiate strong action against retailers found charging extra amounts from customers.
The minister emphasized that such practices violate the maximum retail price regulations. Officials must ensure strict compliance to protect consumers.
Public Outcry and Helpline Reports
Over the past few months, numerous complaints reached the department's helpline number and social media platforms. Residents of Noida, particularly those visiting liquor shops in sectors 62, 71, and 34, voiced their grievances. People in the Bisrakh locality of Greater Noida also reported similar issues.
This public outcry underscored the widespread nature of the problem. The government's suspension of the excise officer aims to address these concerns directly and restore public trust.
The Yogi administration continues to monitor the situation closely. It remains committed to enforcing rules and ensuring fair practices in the excise department across the state.
