Indian women's national boxing team head coach Santiago Nieva has raised concerns over any changes to the scheduled assessment tests (selection trials) at NIS Patiala, warning that disruptions could reduce athletes' recovery time and impact performances in upcoming international competitions.
Ongoing Discussions Between BFI and SAI
The concern arises amid ongoing discussions between the Boxing Federation of India (BFI) and the Sports Authority of India (SAI) to allow the gold and silver medallists from the 2nd Chief of Army Staff (COAS) Cup to directly compete in the final selection trials for the Commonwealth Games and Asian Games, scheduled to be held at NIS from May 11 to 15. However, SAI is yet to approve their inclusion, leading to uncertainty.
Delays in Assessment Process
The assessment process, initially scheduled to begin on May 5, has already been pushed to May 6, raising concerns about further possible delays. In his communication to SAI, Nieva stressed the need to adhere strictly to the timeline.
“The Strength & Conditioning (S&C) tests are scheduled from 5th to 7th May, followed by sparring sessions from 11th to 15th May. It is important that the schedule is adhered to as planned, considering the upcoming international competitions, the Grand Prix Usti nad Labem, Czech Republic — commencing from 15th June and World Boxing Cup Stage 2, China – commencing from 13th June,” Nieva said in his communication.
The coach emphasized that any further disruption could compromise the athletes' preparation and recovery, potentially affecting their performance on the international stage. The Boxing Federation of India is awaiting SAI's decision to finalize the selection process.
