Christian Pulisic's Availability Hangs in Balance for USA vs Australia
The fitness of United States star Christian Pulisic continues to dominate discussions ahead of the USA's FIFA World Cup 2026 Group D clash against Australia at Lumen Field in Seattle. As of now, Pulisic is considered a major doubt for the match as he recovers from a left calf strain sustained during the USA's 4-1 victory over Paraguay in their tournament opener.
What Happened to Pulisic?
The AC Milan winger suffered the injury following a heavy challenge in the first half against Paraguay. Although he completed the opening 45 minutes, his calf tightened during the interval, prompting head coach Mauricio Pochettino to make a late substitution before the second half. Since then, Pulisic has trained separately from the main squad for four consecutive days. During Thursday's training session, he was observed wearing a compression sleeve on his left calf and engaged only in light activities before continuing his recovery work in the gym.
What Has Pochettino Said?
Speaking ahead of the match, USMNT coach Mauricio Pochettino provided a cautiously optimistic update on his captain. "He's evolving and much better from Friday. If he is not available for tomorrow, he will be available for the next game," Pochettino stated. The manager added that the medical staff would conduct a final assessment closer to kickoff to determine Pulisic's fitness. If Pulisic fails to recover in time, the United States could turn to Gio Reyna or Sebastian Berhalter to fill the vacant left-wing position. The USA will be eager to have their talisman available for what is effectively a top-of-the-table showdown. Both the United States and Australia won their opening matches, and victory in Seattle would place the winner in a strong position to secure qualification for the Round of 32.
The Bigger Picture
Even if Pulisic is unavailable, the Americans still possess considerable attacking firepower. Folarin Balogun enters the match in excellent form after scoring twice against Paraguay, while Tim Ream will lead a defense tasked with stopping Australia's dangerous teenage winger Nestory Irankunda. The team remains confident in its depth and ability to perform without their captain if necessary.
