Sheetal Devi Shines at Khelo India Archery Tournament, Shares Inspirational Journey

Under the bright sun at Lucknow's KD Singh Babu Stadium, all attention was focused on Sheetal Devi, the 17-year-old Paris Paralympics bronze medalist, during the 4th Khelo India Women's National Ranking Archery Tournament on Saturday. As arrows flew with remarkable precision, young archers lined up for selfies, sports enthusiasts eagerly sought autographs, and curious spectators strained to catch a glimpse of the armless archer who has brought immense pride to Indian para sports.

From Paralympic Debut to Future Ambitions

Sheetal Devi, who has also secured gold medals at the Para Asian Games and World Championships, expressed her current focus on scoring points in the tournament. "My goal is to give my best at the Asian Para Games, win another gold medal, and see the tricolour flutter for my country," she stated with determination. Reflecting on her Paralympic debut in Paris, she described it as a valuable experience, particularly enjoying the mixed team event where she earned bronze, despite a loss in the individual competition.

A Serendipitous Introduction to Archery

Sheetal's journey into sports began unexpectedly during a medical trip to Bengaluru. "I had never seen people like me in sports. I used to think maybe we can only do gaming," she recalled. After an assessment, she was presented with three options: archery, swimming, and running. "Perhaps, archery chose me," she mused. Her coach introduced her to a video of American archer Matt Stutzman, who shoots with his feet, sparking her initial curiosity and self-doubt about her own capabilities.

Unwavering Support and Growing Recognition

What steadied Sheetal through moments of uncertainty was the unwavering encouragement from her family, friends, and teachers. "They never made me feel different. I never felt I was different from anyone. People supported me a lot," she emphasized. Since the Olympics, her recognition has surged, with many approaching her for inspiration. "It makes me happy when people come forward after seeing me," she shared, highlighting the positive impact of her achievements.

Spurring Interest in Para Archery

Perhaps most gratifying for Sheetal is the noticeable increase in interest in para archery. "When I first saw para archers, there were very few. Now, many more have joined. I am happy that in the coming years, they will make the tricolour fly high," she expressed optimistically. Her presence at the Khelo India event not only showcased her talent but also served as a beacon of hope and motivation for aspiring para athletes across the nation.
