Zach Eflin Re-Signs with Orioles: $10M Deal, Ripken's Verdict & Rotation Needs
Zach Eflin Stays with Orioles on $10 Million Contract

In a decisive move to address their pitching concerns, the Baltimore Orioles have successfully retained veteran right-hander Zach Eflin. The club confirmed the agreement on a one-year contract worth $10 million on Sunday, December 15, 2025.

Eflin's Return and Ripken's Reaction

The deal, which includes a mutual option for the 2027 season, ensures Eflin remains at Camden Yards for the upcoming campaign. This signing is a key part of the Orioles' strategy to rebuild their rotation after a challenging 2025 season, following earlier offseason additions like hitters Taylor Ward and Pete Alonso.

Orioles analyst and content creator Ryan Ripken was quick to voice his approval on social media platform X after the news broke. He emphasized the critical importance of pitching depth over the gruelling MLB schedule.

"The Orioles re-signed Zach Eflin. Really good in my opinion," stated Ripken. "You need pitching. When he’s healthy, he competes. He battles. And most of the time, he gives you a chance to win."

Why Depth Matters: Beyond Five Starters

Ripken elaborated that a team cannot survive with just five starting pitchers. Injuries and the sheer length of the season necessitate a deeper pool of reliable arms. He praised Eflin's experience and competitive mindset as valuable assets for a team aiming to recover.

"You don’t just need five starters," he added. "You need six, seven, sometimes more. That’s why I like this move. It’s good value for the team."

The Quest for an Ace Continues

However, Ryan Ripken made it clear that he does not believe the Orioles' work is finished. He argued that Baltimore still requires a bona fide top-of-the-rotation ace to pair with Eflin and lead the staff.

"Do I think the Orioles are done? No," Ripken said unequivocally. "You still need a top guy."

He identified two potential targets for the Orioles: Ranger Suárez and Framber Valdez. While both are respected left-handers, Ripken expressed a preference for Suárez as a more logical fit for the team's needs.

"I still think Ranger Suárez and Framber Valdez are in play," he noted. "I don’t believe in the Framber deal as much. Ranger makes more sense here."

Eflin's Commitment to Baltimore

Zach Eflin's return aligns with his previously stated desire to remain with the Orioles. His 2025 season was cut short in mid-August due to a lumbar microdiscectomy surgery. During his recovery, he spoke to MLB.com's Jake Rill about his affection for the organization.

"I love this clubhouse," Eflin had said. "I love this place. I’d love to be here."

Now, with his contract secured, Eflin will focus on a healthy return for the 2026 season. His presence provides stability as the Baltimore Orioles continue their active pursuit to construct a competitive pitching rotation capable of contending.
