Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) has officially appointed Hashmatullah Shahidi as the new ODI captain, announcing a 15-member squad for the three-match ODI series against Ireland scheduled for later this month. Revamped Squad for Ireland Series
The squad includes a mix of experienced players and emerging talents, with Shahidi leading the batting order. Notable inclusions are Rahmanullah Gurbaz as wicketkeeper-batsman and spinner Rashid Khan, who returns after a brief break. The ACB has also introduced two uncapped players: fast bowler Naveen-ul-Haq and batsman Ibrahim Zadran, signaling a focus on building depth.
According to ACB chairman Mirwais Ashraf, "Hashmatullah's leadership qualities and consistent performance make him the ideal candidate to guide the team. We are confident this squad can compete strongly against Ireland."

Shahidi, 28, has played 58 ODIs, scoring 1,820 runs at an average of 34.71. He replaces previous captain Gulbadin Naib, who stepped down after a string of poor results. The new captain emphasized a balanced approach: "Our focus is on building a cohesive unit. We have a good mix of youth and experience, and I am excited to lead this team."

Rashid Khan, the world's top-ranked ODI bowler, will be crucial with his leg-spin. The series will also showcase opener Hazratullah Zazai, who has a strike rate of 86.4 in ODIs. The team's recent form includes a 2-0 series loss against Bangladesh, prompting the change in leadership.
The three-match ODI series is set to be played in Abu Dhabi due to bilateral agreements. The ACB expects a competitive series against Ireland, who recently defeated Zimbabwe 2-1. The first ODI will be on July 28, with the subsequent matches on July 31 and August 2.
