Ahmedabad: A 37-year-old man was arrested by the crime branch for allegedly operating an illegal cricket betting racket focused on the upcoming T20 final scheduled for Sunday. Acting on a tip-off, a team from the crime branch raided a rented house at Municipal No. 14 in the Hansol area of Sardarnagar. The operation was carried out while the Qualifier-1 T20 match between Royal Challengers Bangalore and Gujarat Titans was underway.
Details of the Arrest
The accused, a native of Indore in Madhya Pradesh, was running his activities from the rented premises. According to police, he was accepting and placing illegal wagers on match outcomes for financial gain. Officers seized a range of betting-related items during the raid, including a laptop, a tablet, five mobile phones, a keyboard, a foolscap notebook used for records, a debit card, four identity cards, a bag, and a power bill. The total value of the seized property was estimated at Rs 4.15 lakh.
Legal Proceedings
A case has been registered at DCB Police Station, Part-B, under Sections 4 and 5 of the Gambling Act. Police have also reported that another accused, also from Indore, is currently absconding. Investigations are ongoing to trace the absconding suspect and uncover any further connections to the illegal betting network.
